2010 Summer Workshops at Spiro Arts
May 8th
The Poem You Weren't Expecting
Instructor: James Arthur (Spiro Artist-in-Residence for the month of May)
Tuition: $50
Enrollment Limit: 12
Hours: 9-5
Description: If you write poetry, then you may have already had the exhilarating experience of creating a poem whose form and meaning were such a surprise that the poem seemed like a lucky accident, or a gift: a poem that took you unawares and told you something that you didn't yet know. In "The Poem You Weren't Expecting," you'll learn how to court inspiration, so that you can find these poems without waiting for them to come to you in a flash of insight. Whether you're an experienced poet or a beginner, you'll become adept at subduing your inner critic and writing without inhibition. You'll get thoughtful feedback on your work from the instructor and your classmates, and you'll learn useful strategies for revision. Be ready for fearless experimentation, and plan to emerge from this course with drafts of several new poems.
Materials: Please bring your own writing materials, and up to two poems (works in-progress or finished). If you wish to receive feedback from James and/or classmates, bring additional copies of your poems.
Instructor: James Arthur's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, and The Best of Canadian Poetry 2008. He has received numerous rewards and scholarships including: The Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Stegner Fellowship, and a Discovery/The Nation Prize, as well as fellowships to Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, and the Sacatar Foundation. He also has an extensive teaching resume including online workshops for Stanford Continuing Studies and UCLA Extension. His first book of poems, Charms Against Lightning, has recently been accepted by Copper Canyon Press-due out fall of 2012. James will be a resident artist at Spiro Arts for the month of May!
